First the good news, your calls and emails worked, SB 124, the bill that would have abolished District Court Probable Cause Hearings was REMOVED from the budget bill, HB 2 on Wednesday. However, the House Judiciary Committee will hold public hearings on SB 124 so we still need to work to stop this bad bill from becoming law. Unfortunately, the bad news just keeps coming out of Concord. We have recently learned that there may be a plot to kill SB 116 “Constitutional Carry”!
According to our sources in the Capitol, the House leadership is refusing to enforce party unity within the Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee, and we heard that certain members are planning to oppose the passage of SB 116.
The House leadership needs to be told that they are expected to force all Republicans to vote for SB 116 in the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee. You see, Speaker of the House Shawn Jasper makes all committee assignments, and therefore, he is responsible for the conduct of the Representatives he has assigned to the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee. Just last week, it was reported that he removed Rep. Laurie Sanborn from the House Finance Committee because she opposed an increase in the gas tax and said so.
Here’s what you can do to help. Call and email Speaker Jasper AND House Majority Leader Rep. Jack Flanagan and DEMAND that they enforce party unity and make those recalcitrant Republicans on the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee vote SB 116 “Ought to Pass”. If they are unable or unwilling to enforce the provisions of their party’s platform, then they must remove the anti-gun, anti-freedom Republicans from the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee and replace them with Representatives who will vote for freedom and liberty and vote SB 116 “Ought to Pass”. There is a precedent for removal of Members from a committee because Speaker Jasper did just that last week when he punished Rep. Sanborn for trying to vote to protect the taxpayers’ interests.

Deliver the SAME MESSAGE TO THE SPEAKER AND THE MAJORITY LEADER. You expect them to make changes to the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee to ensure that SB 116 is voted “ought to pass”. Tell them that you expect them to follow their party’s platform and to punish those members who refuse to do so.
You should also contact all Republican Members of the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee and demand that they pressure their colleagues to follow the party platform.
